Activated carbon filters are used for a wide range of filtration tasks. Activated carbon has been used as a filter medium in industrial applications for many years. Thanks to its very large surface area it can absorb a high percentage of foreign substances. Activated carbon is used in a wide variety of filter media or even sold by the kilo for use as a filter medium.
In compressed-air applications, for example, filters containing just a few grams of activated carbon are used to remove small concentrations of oil aerosols from the air. On the other hand, there are also compressed-air treatment systems that use several kilos of activated carbon to protect the downstream production equipment from oil contamination. Since activated carbon can also absorb oil aerosols, it is used to prevent these aerosols from precipitating in large production networks and contaminating the compressed air.
Over time, oil-laden compressed air can put a heavy strain on the air distribution network. It can also cause technical problems in many applications, up to and including expensive machine failures or even complete production stoppages. Prime examples of this can be found in food and pharmaceutical plants.
But even in the manufacturing industry, highly sensitive applications are also commonplace. Therefore, activated carbon filters should always be designed and installed by professionals.
