“Pre-filter” is the common term for filters used for coarse filtration of liquids, air, and gases – usually for solid/liquid separation and compressed-air treatment.
As a rule, pre-filters are installed upstream of pumps and stationary or transportable machines in order to extend their service life or optimize the respective technical processes. Pre-filters typically provide filtration down to 3 µm.
Scope of application for pre-filters
When used for fresh-water filtration upstream of pumps, many pre-filters do not need to be replaced throughout the service life of the system. They must, however, be checked and cleaned as necessary. By contrast, the pre-filters used for compressed-air filtration and in solid/liquid separation always have a limited service life. This means they must be replaced after reaching a certain saturation limit in order to guarantee the specified flow values and avoid subsequent problems.
Also, the correct design of the pre-filter and its location within the system are critical factors – both should therefore be determined by a trained specialist. When designing a pre-filter, a wide variety of materials and filter solutions are available.
