MANN+HUMMEL’s first steps in filtration were textile air filters from Ludwigsburg. Today, more than seven decades later, the Group is the global market leader for automotive and industrial filters with business locations on every continent. MANN+HUMMEL can look back on a long, eventful, and successful company history. MANN+HUMMEL can trace its origins back to 1938, when Adolf Mann and Dr. Erich Hummel were the owners of the Bleyle textile company in Ludwigsburg. When a large piston manufacturer in Stuttgart offered them a contract to produce engine filters shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, they seized the opportunity – and laid the foundations for the MANN+HUMMEL company.
Filtration that meets the highest demands
The innovations and product developments “made by MANN+HUMMEL” and the MANN-FILTER brand paved the way for the company to become a development partner and OEM for the automotive sector and general industry. Optimizing the fuel consumption and performance of engines, machines and systems, as well as avoiding pollutant emissions and protecting people, are becoming ever more important. MANN+HUMMEL has increased the amount of plastic in its products over the years. This approach enables more flexible designs, weight savings, and associated process optimizations. Another significant innovation is the introduction of fusible core technology.
Which allows the seamless production of complex suction tubes. As a result, the company was able put its first plastic intake manifolds into series production. It is developing plastic oil filter housings in parallel – complex modular solutions are also in the pipeline. Away from the automotive sector, MANN+HUMMEL is also active in the field of hydraulics and industrial filtration. With the development of groundbreaking product lines such as Europiclon, Picolino, the Iquoron series, the Entaron family and the Pre-Line fuel pre-filter, MANN+HUMMEL is also emerging as a leading supplier to the construction and agricultural machinery sector, the compressed-air and vacuum technology industry, and for mechanical engineering applications in general.
Sustainability in the filtration industry
Since the mid-1990s, the issue of environmental protection and recycling has become increasingly prominent within society and, as a pioneer in this area, MANN+HUMMEL has responded to the new requirements and developments in industry and society, both in terms of its own production processes and its use of materials.
In 2009, it developed a long-term Group strategy based on a vision it calls “Leadership in Filtration”. Besides high quality and innovation leadership, the key goals are customer-focused service worldwide and further growth through the acquisition of filtration companies. The company’s management has already taken this and other aspects on board by completing the largest acquisition in the company’s history – of the US-based Affinia Group’s filtration business. As a result, MANN+HUMMEL now has more than 20,000 employees at over 80 locations worldwide.

The company’s headquarters is and will remain in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. The company has made a commitment to this in the form of a new technology center, which opened its doors in 2016. Whether in Germany or Denmark, the USA, China, India or Uzbekistan – MANN+HUMMEL is present with ideas and solutions wherever its customers need them. To ensure this, MANN+HUMMEL has more than 80 locations worldwide.
Global partner with local support
In the future, the Group’s global activities will continue to be managed from Ludwigsburg; new technologies will be developed and innovations put through their paces. At the same time, MANN+HUMMEL aims to be close to its customers and their needs with the MANN FILTER brand. The most important decisions should ideally be made in person on site. For this reason, MANN+HUMMEL will maintain its locations on all five continents and thus successfully act as a “glocal” (global positioning but local support) partner to industry.
In addition to its many worldwide locations, MANN+HUMMEL also operates special sites with an identity all of their own, such as:
- the world’s largest filter plant in Marklkofen, Bavaria, from where more than 170 million filter elements make their way around the world every year
- or its Internet of Things lab in Singapore, where the employees are busy analyzing data, writing software, developing algorithms, cross-linking products, and preparing for digitalization.
