Why is an air filter needed? 

The main task of the air filter is to filter the air drawn in by the engine in order to supply the engine with clean air and protect the moving parts in the engine. Filtration prevents wear-relevant dirt particles from entering the combustion chamber and forming deposits there. The filter fineness of an air filter is 3 - 5 µm with a separation efficiency of greater than 99.9 %.This means that a maximum of one particle in 1000, which is in the range between 3 and 5 µm, enters the combustion chamber. For comparison: a human hair is about 40 µm thick. 

How is an air filter constructed? 

TThe air filter consists of the main filter, a safety element (if fitted) and the surrounding filter housing. The air filter element integrated in the filter housing acts as the centrepiece of the filter and performs the main filtration function. Air filter elements consist of several filter and support layers folded in a star shape, which are placed around or in the stabilising support tube in a cylindrical shape. The cylinder is finally closed by the end caps. The filter medium usually consists of a cellulose-based material that is comparable to paper in its composition. To protect the filter medium from both moisture and fire, it is impregnated with resin. Other materials include glass fibre, plastic or metal mesh. All filter media are available in different filter fineness. The filter elements and media used influence factors such as dirt absorption, retention capacity or pressure loss. 

What is the function of the safety element? 

While the main filter performs the task of course and fine air filtration, the safety element primarily protects the air intake duct during the filter change. The safety element is positioned behind the main element in the direction of flow and, with a filter fineness of approx. 50 µm, has a much coarser structure than the main filter.

Due to this coarse structure, it can retain dust particles that can become detached when the primary filter is removed, thus preventing dirt from entering the clean side of the engine. Safety elements therefore play a particularly important role in construction machinery or other machines that have to be maintained in a dusty environment (e.g. combine harvesters). 

How often does the air filter element need to be changed? 

Depending on the machine manufacturer, there are specifications with fixed intervals for changing the air filter elements. The element is usually changed as part of the inspection. It is also possible to monitor the replacement of the element using an electronic indicator. If the filter change is delayed for too long, this can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, reduced performance and ultimately engine damage. 

Does it make sense to change the air filter earlier? 

No, premature replacement is not recommended, as the efficiency of an air filter increases over the course of its service life. The layer of dust that accumulates on the outside of the filter provides additional filtration. Manufacturers have found out through numerous tests when the optimum time for replacement is. Therefore, please always adhere to the specified replacement interval or the message on a maintenance indicator. Premature replacement will only result in unnecessary costs.
